Civil Engineering

Groundworks that give your surface a solid start

The life of a road, car park or yard is decided below the surface. If the ground is poorly excavated, the sub-base is thin or water has nowhere to go, even good tarmac will soon rut, crack and hold puddles.

SN Enterprises Ltd carries out the groundworks and civils that sit beneath surfacing: digging out, removing spoil, laying and compacting sub-base, setting kerbs and edgings, running drainage and ducting, and forming the base for new hardstandings. Keeping groundworks and surfacing with one contractor means nobody can pass the blame for levels, falls or a soft spot.

We work for businesses, landowners, councils and developers across Coventry, Nuneaton, Rugby, Birmingham and the rest of the Midlands. Jobs range from preparing a single hardstanding to building a new access road in full, complete with drainage, kerbs and a finished surface.

Why choose us

Why use us for your groundworks

  • Groundworks and surfacing together

One contractor handles the base and the finish, so levels, falls and edges are planned together and there is no dispute over who owns a defect.

  • Preparation is our priority

We would rather spend longer on excavation and compaction than rush to the surface, because a sound base is what stops rutting and sinking later.

  • 20+ years on site

Over twenty years of surfacing and groundworks means poor ground and drainage problems get recognised early, while they are still cheap to put right.

  • Accredited and insured

SafeContractor Gold status, a DBS checked team and £10 million public liability cover make us simple to approve for commercial and public sector sites.

  • Safe, tidy working

Open excavations are barriered off and spoil is kept under control, so your premises stay safe and usable while the work goes on around them.

How the job runs

How we approach a groundworks job

The order matters: everything underground goes in before the surface is built up.

  • 1

    Step 01

    Survey and levels

We visit, check ground conditions, existing levels and where surface water drains now, then agree the finished levels and falls your new surface needs.

  • 2

    Step 02

    Dig out and clear

The area is excavated to the depth the design calls for, spoil is loaded and taken away, and any soft or unsuitable ground is dealt with before building up.

  • 3

    Step 03

    Build the base

Drainage, ducts and kerbs go in first, then sub-base is laid in layers and compacted, giving a firm, level platform that sheds water where it should.

  • 4

    Step 04

    Surface and handover

With the base complete, we lay the tarmac, concrete or paving on top, clear the site and walk you through the finished work.

Pricing

What shapes the cost of groundworks

Groundworks are priced from a site survey, because what lies under the surface drives most of the cost.

Get a fixed written quote
  • 01

    Depth of excavation

The deeper the dig to reach sound ground, the more machine time, muck-away and replacement sub-base the job needs, so depth is the biggest variable.

  • 02

    Ground conditions

Clay, made ground or waterlogged areas may need extra excavation, a geotextile membrane or additional sub-base before they will carry vehicles reliably.

  • 03

    Drainage and ducting

The length of pipe runs, the number of gullies or chambers and how far water must travel to an outfall all add to the scope of work.

  • 04

    Access and spoil volume

Tight access, working near live traffic or buildings, and the amount of spoil to be taken away and disposed of all influence the final figure.

FAQs

Groundworks and civils questions

Why does the sub-base matter so much?

The sub-base spreads the weight of vehicles over the ground below. If it is too thin, poorly compacted or laid on soft ground, the surface above flexes, cracks and sinks, usually along the wheel tracks. A well-built sub-base on a firm formation is what lets tarmac or concrete last, which is why we treat it as the most important part of the job rather than a step to hurry through.

Can you do the groundworks and the surfacing on the same job?

Yes, and it is usually the better option. When the same contractor excavates, lays the sub-base, installs drainage and then surfaces, the levels and falls are designed as one. You deal with a single point of contact and a single quote, and if something is not right, there is no argument between two firms about whose work caused it.

Do you install drainage as part of groundworks?

We do. New hardstandings and car parks need somewhere for surface water to go, so drainage runs, gullies and channels are built in while the ground is open. Ducting for lighting, barriers or EV chargers can go in at the same stage, which saves digging up a finished surface later. For blocked or failing drains on an existing site, see our drainage service.

What happens to the soil and rubble you dig out?

Excavated material is loaded and removed from site as part of the job, so you are not left with spoil heaps to deal with. Where the material is suitable, some of it may be reused on site to cut down on haulage. The volume involved is one of the factors in your quote, and we explain how it will be handled when we price the work.

Can you build a new private or access road from scratch?

Yes. A new road package typically covers clearing and excavating the route, installing drainage and ducting, setting kerbs, building up and compacting the sub-base, then laying the surface course and any line marking. We price each stage clearly so you can see where the money goes, and we survey first to confirm ground conditions and the traffic the road has to carry.
