Damaged Roads

Finding the cause before choosing the repair

Road damage always has a cause, and the visible symptom is only part of it. Crazed cracking often means the base has lost strength. Ruts in the wheel tracks point to layers that were too thin for the traffic. A dip or sunken area suggests the ground underneath has settled or washed out, and a broken edge usually means nothing is holding the road in place at the side.

We survey damaged private and commercial roads across the Midlands and match the repair to the fault. Some roads need crack sealing and a few patches. Others need the worn layers planed off and relaid, or failed sections dug out to the sub-base and rebuilt. You get the options side by side in a written quote, with the reasons for each.

  • Crazing and block cracking
  • Rutting in wheel tracks
  • Subsidence and sunken areas
  • Failed and lifting patches
  • Edge break-up and verge damage
  • Standing water and poor drainage

Why choose us

Why road owners bring damaged roads to us

  • We fix the cause

Resurfacing over a failed base or a blocked drain just hides the fault for a while. We find what caused the damage and deal with it first.

  • Repairs matched to budget

If the whole road cannot be done at once, we prioritise the worst sections and plan the rest for later, so spending goes where it matters most.

  • Every repair method in-house

Crack sealing, patching, planing, rebuilding and resurfacing are all work we carry out, so the recommendation is never limited by what we offer.

  • Safe on live roads

Our DBS checked team works under SafeContractor Gold accreditation and £10 million public liability cover, keeping residents and traffic safe around the works.

  • 20 years, all guaranteed

Over 20 years of road work, 5-star ratings on Google and Yell.com, and a guarantee on every repair we carry out.

How the job runs

How we tackle a damaged road

  • 1

    Step 01

    Survey the whole road

We walk the full length, map each defect and look for the cause, such as drainage, overloading or an unsupported edge, so the repair targets the source.

  • 2

    Step 02

    Agree the approach

You get a written quote setting out where patching will do, where planing and relaying is needed, and where the base must be rebuilt.

  • 3

    Step 03

    Plane, dig and rebuild

Worn layers are planed off and failed areas excavated to firm ground, with new sub-base and base layers laid and compacted where needed.

  • 4

    Step 04

    Surface and seal

New surface course goes down, joints and edges are sealed, drainage is checked, and the road is swept and reopened with its markings restored.

Pricing

What affects the cost of repairing a damaged road

The cost depends on how deep the damage goes, which is why every quote follows a free survey rather than a rate per square metre given over the phone.

Get a fixed written quote
  • 01

    Depth of the fault

Surface cracking can be sealed or overlaid, but failure in the base or sub-base means excavation and rebuilding, which uses more time and material.

  • 02

    Extent of damage

Scattered defects on a sound road cost less to put right than damage spread along its length, where resurfacing becomes the better value.

  • 03

    Drainage and edges

Where water or unsupported edges caused the damage, new gullies, channels or kerbs add to the price but stop the repair failing again.

  • 04

    Residents and access

Roads that must stay open to residents, tenants or deliveries may need to be worked half-width or in phases, which affects the programme.

FAQs

Damaged road questions

Why is my road cracking when it is not very old?

Early cracking usually points to the construction rather than the surface. Common causes are a sub-base that was too thin or poorly compacted, layers not designed for the vehicles using the road, or water getting into the base because the drainage is inadequate. We look for the cause at survey, because resurfacing without fixing it means the cracks come back.

What is road planing and when is it needed?

Planing removes the worn top layers of a road with a milling machine, leaving a clean, textured base for new material. It is used when levels need to stay the same, for example at kerbs, doorways and drainage covers, and when the old surface is too damaged to overlay. The planings are taken away and the new surface is laid to the original height.

Is it cheaper to keep patching or to resurface?

Patching is cheaper in the short term when damage is limited to a few areas. Once repairs are needed across much of the road, or old patches keep failing, you end up paying repeatedly for the same surface. At that point resurfacing usually costs less over the life of the road. We will give you both prices so you can compare.

What causes a road surface to sink?

Sinking normally comes from the ground below the road: a leaking drain washing out fill, soft ground that was never properly compacted, or tree roots drying out clay. Resurfacing the dip will not stop it sinking again. We identify the likely cause, dig out the affected area and rebuild it from firm ground up.

Can a damaged road be repaired in stages?

Yes. Many owners spread the work over more than one budget year by repairing the most dangerous or fastest-failing sections first. We set out a priority order in the quote, so you can see what needs doing now and what can safely wait, and plan the later phases when you are ready.
